FAQ's

The original song “Hideaway,” is such a world of colors opening with a very quiet soft out-of-time guitar section and then layers more later on. As the song continues, we finally establish a beat. I wanted to preserve this by making all the players in the ensemble play some kind of “up and down” pattern within the key signature (out-of-time) to mimic the original song. The main melody of the song is plastered mostly on the metallics of the ensemble with the wooden instruments covering additional textures and other motifs to bring out the melodies more and more.

As we move into the 12/8 (the swing section), you’ll notice a lot repeated patterns all over the place (especially with the latin 6/8 cowbell ostinato in the auxiliary percussion). As this section later develops, we arrive at an all percussion section with tambourines, shakers, bongos, and all sorts of stuff being played by the mallets as well). This piece is on and off with weird, and out of key progressions that will surely test your sight-reading abilities at first-glance. And we then arrive at the end again with a slow-down as all of the players begin to layer out, and on a nice resolve by the vibraphones. This arrangement is sure to peak the playing abilities of the advanced percussion ensembles out there with out-of-time passages, odd quintuplet phrasing and ostinatos.
